Is This Canada’s Next Top Business School?
What happens when a school offers more than just a degree? They breed well-rounded, self-aware graduates with great futures ahead.
If there’s one thing we know about students today, it’s that you don’t just want a typical, cookie-cutter job. You want a rewarding career where you can make an impact.
Growing up in the post-Recession era has made your generation more entrepreneurial and purpose-driven than ever before. And thanks to social media and shows like Dragon’s Den and Silicon Valley, you’ve seen how with a little creativity and a lot of passion, social movements and start-up companies can grow exponentially almost overnight.
You’re founders, innovators, crypto investors, and real estate owners— without even graduating high school.
However, just because you’ve got a lot of experience under your belt at a young age doesn’t mean there isn’t more to learn. In fact, that’s why it’s even more critical that you choose the right post-secondary school that will nurture your natural business acumen and help you build upon your existing skillset.
Fortunately for you, we’ve found a place that checks all the boxes and then some and its name is the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor.
Invest in a School that Invests in You
Two years ago, we listed the University of Windsor as Canada’s #1 University to Watch, and we haven’t taken our eyes off them since. Their growth has been absolutely unprecedented.
This year alone, the business school hired eight new faculty members— each of whom are experts in their respective fields, combining both industry and academic experience. Odette’s faculty-to-student ratio is one of the lowest in Canada with one faculty member for every 17 students. Their average class size: just 35 students.
But it’s not just people who they’re investing in. Their $30+ million Innovation Centre houses their startup incubator and entrepreneurship support hub, known as the EPICentre. This cutting-edge facility offers a host of services, including consulting, mentoring, funding and physical space to help uWindsor students start and grow their businesses.
In addition, their RBC EPIC Founders program will literally pay you to work on your start-up idea over the summer while also giving you access to subject matter experts and valuable entrepreneurial education.
In short, if you’re looking for a school that will help you launch your latest venture and give you the support you need to make it a success, this is the place to be.
Odette Encourages Several Pathways to Success
Let’s be real. You probably don’t know what you want to do after your business undergrad. If this sounds like you, then you should go to a school that doesn’t limit your options, but rather exposes you to a variety of potential career paths.
Odette offers four different double major opportunities, including economics, computer science, psychology, and mathematics. They also have six degree specializations, from data analytics to marketing and strategy.
Last but certainly not least, they are the only program in Canada that offers a CPAO accredited five-year pathway whereby students can earn a Bachelors in Commerce and a MBA. Upon completion of the MBA, you’ll be eligible to write the Common Final Examination without having to take additional courses.
We like Odette because they empower students to explore a wide range of disciplines, while also giving them the opportunity specialize if they’d like. In today’s rapidly-evolving business environment, it’s a good idea to go to a school that offers this level of flexibility.
And They Have Connections in the US and Beyond
If you have your sights set on working abroad post-graduation, Odette will get you on the right track. For instance, you can experience the “global economy” first-hand by going on an academic exchange. Business students can choose from over 27 universities across the world.
If you’d prefer to stay closer to home, Odette provides many opportunities for students to network with leading firms right on campus. The annual CPA Night brings in leading professional services firms like Deloitte, KPMG, Hyatt Lassaline, and Roth Mosey and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Additionally, as part of the Richard Peddie Leadership Initiative (RPLI), the Georgie-Odette Leadership Symposium (GOLS) is an event held once a year that gives students the chance to hone their leadership skills in interactive sessions with prominent business and industry leaders. Not only is this event exclusive to Odette, students get to attend at the super-discounted rate of $20 (that’s an 80% savings!).
There are also opportunities to check out the business scene in nearby cities. For example, earlier this year, a select group of MBA students got to travel to Toronto as part of the Odette’s Enroute program. Participants were offered an exclusive look into the inner-workings of a number prominent organizations including RBC, MaRS – CAHBI & CIBC Live Labs, ReShift Media, Air Canada, OLG, TIFF, BMO, HSBC, and MLSE.
When picking a business school, it’s hard to know where to start. Our advice? Choose a school that opens the right doors. Whether you’re looking to be the next Zuckerberg or simply want an education that gives you options, Odette has you covered with flexible education, a wealth of resources and access to top employers both in Canada and abroad.
