More Than An Education: How This School Invests In Your Professional (and Personal) Development
They say that a lot of what you learn in life happens outside of the classroom, and at Briercrest College and Seminary, that couldn’t be truer.
Briercrest is a place that wants its students to reach all of their goals – professional, educational, social, and certainly spiritual. In other words, they don’t just help you figure out what you’ll do after post-secondary school, but also who you’ll be.
From their wide range of extra-curricular activities to their student support services, here are just a few of the ways Briercrest helps students grow as individuals.
1. There are so many ways to get involved
Whether you’re passionate about music, athletics, or just want to make some new connections, Briercrest offers tons of opportunities for students to explore their interests. For instance, the sports buffs will be happy to know that Briercrest’s varsity and junior varsity teams compete almost every weekend throughout the school year.
For those who are more interested in the performing arts, you should keep your eye on Briercrest’s music teams and stage productions. The music ensembles perform on campus, in local churches, and even tours across Western Canada. Drama enthusiasts can audition for parts in the annual Briercrest Christmas production, and for Briercrest Summer Stage, which puts on two full musicals between the months of April and June. Several other performance events take place throughout the academic year, such as their Remembrance Day production “Voices from the Front.”
Naturally, Briercrest also offers plenty of opportunities for students to grow in their faith. For instance, on Sunday evenings, many students gather together for Surrender, a student-led worship night. They also hold daily chapels four days a week (Monday-Thursday). Lastly, annual conferences and retreats like the RETHINK Conference and Youth Quake gather hundreds of youth from across the country to engage in meaningful conversations and fun faith-based activities.
2. They offer personalized guidance and support
While most universities’ Student Success Centres are focused on helping students reach their academic goals, Briercrest takes things up a notch. In addition to the typical resources like bridging programs, tutoring, academic accommodations, and workshops, the Briercrest Student Success Centre also offers drop-in support for those times when you just need a little nudge in the right direction.
If you can’t make it into the centre, you can also find a comprehensive list of helpful links to various apps and resources to help you manage your time, stay organized, and even memorize scripture right on their website.
Last but certainly not least, they offer affordable health and counselling services to students who may be struggling with the adjustment to university or dealing with difficult family or relationship issues. The late nights and long study sessions that come with university life can be stressful, so it’s important to make your mental health a priority. Counselling sessions are only $30 an hour for full-time students so you can get the help you need without breaking the bank.
3. They help you hone your leadership skills
Interested in pursuing a career in ministry after graduation? Briercrest can help you gain the experience and soft skills you need to get you there. For example, their Service and Experiential Learning (SEL) program helps students apply the theory they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world challenges while serving in the Church and the local community.
Briercrest also offers a variety of leadership courses, seminars, workshops and week-long programs at their Centre for Leadership Studies. You can pursue certifications in subjects like governance, self-leadership, coaching, conflict management, team leadership, change management, and leadership communication.
This is a great option for students who might be interested in going on to Master’s level study after their certification, as all Leadership Certification courses can be applied to the MA Leadership and Management program at Briercrest Seminary.
As you can see, Briercrest offers so much more than an education. To succeed in today’s world, students don’t just need the technical skills or theoretical knowledge, but also the soft skills to use them effectively. And that’s exactly the kind of education Briecrest College and Seminary delivers.
