Garrett MacDonald: Canada’s Student of the Week
This week, we’re celebrating Garrett MacDonald as Canada’s Student of the Week.
He has a very impressive mix of extra-curricular experience and academic excellence. Outside of the classroom, he keeps himself busy running his own business, Digital Decisions, a successful consumer electronics consulting business. He’s also a leader at a top basketball camp and an avid Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete.
CampusRankings caught up with Garrett to find out what inspires his work and how he spends his day-to-day.
Tell us about yourself in under 140 characters.
I am a high school student who is interested in pursuing business at university and beyond. I love computers, fashion, cars, and martial arts. My goal in my career is to achieve success while genuinely helping people.
Where do you currently attend school?
Eastview Secondary School, Barrie, Ontario
What is your favourite thing about your school?
My favourite thing about my school is the teaching staff. They have pushed me on a pathway to success, and I wouldn’t be where I am right now without them.
What do you plan on studying at university and why?
I plan on studying business administration, or commerce, as well as computer science at University. These are where two of my biggest passions lie, and I feel that I can mobilize the intellectual assets which I have best in these fields.
What are you most looking forward to at university?
I am most looking forward to meeting like-minded individuals, as I seldom see them in my high school. This is not to say that I do not appreciate and enjoy the company of my peers at my school, but rather that I am looking forward to sharing my passions with others who think like me as I progress throughout my life.
What’s your best study tip or habit you’d like to share?
The best study tip or habit I have is to have control over your mindset, and to simply not let doubt or misinformation override your determination to succeed. One who is determined to be the best that they can be will seldom falter from a good work ethic.?
What is one major challenge that you’ve had to overcome at school? How did you overcome it?
I have had to overcome many things, as my grades used to not really reflect my intelligence. I needed to learn more about myself, and overcome complacency in order to achieve excellence. I also struggled socially for many years, which certainly disrupted my path to academic success. I overcame both of these by building self-confidence, and finding people who believed in me. This allowed me to gain clarity and foresight, and opening up the opportunity for me to gain popularity and increase my course marks.
What are your main extra-curricular activities?
My main extra curricular is certainly martial arts. It has always been something I’ve been good at, and have won numerous competitions in multiple styles of martial arts. I have in previous years done other things, like volleyball, soccer, and hockey. I’ve participated in writers clubs and chess club earlier on as well, and look forward to being a part of the DECA business club this coming year.
What motivates you to do these activities?
My interest in improving myself has motivated me to do martial arts, and my motivation for clubs has been related to interests in the areas which the clubs appeal to.
What’s your dream job?
My dream job is one where I can do many things. I would love to be in a position where I could be a group leader, computer scientist, innovator, designer, and social activist. I want to be in a position where I can innovate, motivate, and help people on a large scale.
What are your hobbies and interests?
My biggest hobbies include reading non-fiction, learning, writing creatively and objectively, practicing martial arts, doing visual arts, listening to music, spotting cars, and learning about/investing in style and fashion.
Favourite movies & TV shows?
House of Cards, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and the Jason Bourne series.
Favourite travel destination?
My favourite destination that I’ve been to is France, but the destination which I would most like to go to in the future is either London, England or Milan, Italy.
Any upcoming travel plans?
I hope to travel to the eastern Canadian provinces next summer, as well as potentially returning to Europe.
What are the three things you can’t live without?
I couldn’t live without music, access to the internet, or ginger ale.
What’s your go-to website?
My go-to website is probably Facebook, as that is where I am a part of several style groups, and is also the front of my business marketing.
Who do you look up to?
I look up to my mother, because she taught me the importance of building relationships and working hard.
